President, CNBC
Mark Hoffman was named president of CNBC in February 2005. An award winning broadcasting veteran with an impressive record of developing programming and increasing revenue and ratings, Hoffman oversees the world’s leading business news network. He reports directly to Jeff Zucker, president and chief executive officer of NBC Universal.
Previously, Mark served as president and general manager of WVIT/NBC30, NBC’s owned and operated station in Connecticut, in August of 2001. Mark came to WVIT/NBC30 from CNBC, where he was vice president & managing editor, Business News since January 1999. At CNBC he was responsible for setting the editorial direction for the network’s daytime business programming – resulting in dramatic increases in viewership. He has also served as acting president and managing director for CNBC Europe and developed and launched the digital cable network CNBC World.
In 1997, Mark joined CNBC as executive producer for CNBC post-market hours where he oversaw programming for Market Wrap and The Edge, which he developed and launched, along with Business Center. Under Hoffman’s direction, the network increased its household viewership in the time period by 49%. Specifically, Market Wrap, achieved a 45% increase in household delivery, The Edge earned a 70% ratings increase while Business Center grew 57%. During his tenure as Executive Producer, Hoffman also served as Director of Talent Development where he was responsible for securing new on-air talent.
Prior to joining CNBC Hoffman had an extremely successful television station career. From 1995 to 1996 Mark was vice president and general manager of KDNL-TV in St. Louis, where he oversaw the station’s affiliation change from Fox to ABC. From 1993 until 1995 Hoffman served as vice president of News at KNBC-TV in Los Angeles, where substantial ratings gains were achieved and the news team won the Emmy Award for Best Newscast. Prior to his work in Los Angeles, from 1991 until 1993, Hoffman was news director at WBBM-TV in Chicago where the station, for the first time in many years, secured second place in all newscasts and grew to within one rating point of first place at 10 PM. From 1987-1991 Hoffman was news director at WAGA-TV in Atlanta, where the station won the Emmy Award for Best News Operation and was considered one of the strongest CBS affiliates in the country. From 1983 until 1987 Mark served in a number of senior news management positions at the ABC owned stations in Chicago (WLS-TV) and New York (WABC-TV).
Hoffman serves on the boards of the MetroHartford Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Hartford Economic Development Council, the Urban League of Greater Hartford, the Science Center of Connecticut and Junior Achievement of Southwest New England.
Hoffman holds an M.A. degree in Journalism from the University of Missouri and a B.A. in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley. He is married and has three sons.
