5 New Shows And More Than 50 Properties Integrate Green Messaging in Support of Fifth Annual Earth Week

Over 100 Hours of Original Environmental Content to Air On-Air and Online Throughout the Week

“Green” will be ever-present across the networks this week, as a wide array of shows – from USA’s “In Plain Sight” to Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of Orange County” – rally around the environment in support of NBCUniversal’s fifth annual Earth Week, April 15-22. NBC’s News division will also join the effort with compelling reports on pressing environmental issues. These on-air and online programming initiatives support NBCUniversal’s continued commitment to informing audiences about the environment, and helping them realize the big impact they can collectively have by making small behavioral changes in their everyday lives.

“After five years of Earth Week, we have found that our audiences continue to look for information about what is happening to the environment, and steps they can take to make a difference,” says Beth Colleton, SVP NBCUniversal Corporate Social Responsibility. “Integrating environmental themes into our storylines has proven to be an effective, fresh way to provide viewers with this information, which our entire cross-company portfolio has embraced.”

More than 50 networks across NBCUniversal’s vast on-air and online portfolio will feature 100+ hours of new and original environmentally themed content, including:

TODAY will kick off Earth Week at 7 a.m. ET on Monday morning, acting as the green logo “light switch.”

USA: “In Plain Sight” starring Mary McCormack (Mary Shannon) and Fred Weller (Marshall Mann), will integrate a green theme into its storyline this week when Mary’s ex-husband Mark, is hired for work installing solar panels.

Bravo: On “The Real Housewives of Orange County,” the ladies take a “glamping” trip to Santa Barbara and one housewife dishes about her decision to drive a Prius.

The Weather Channel (TWCC) will premiere “Turbine Cowboys,” the first docu-series in the network’s “Braving the Elements” anthology series, which will chronicle the lives of the men and women who brave extreme and dangerous weather conditions at work on the wind turbines.

Oxygen will air an episode of “Best Ink” in which tattoo artists compete in a flash challenge on the Underwood Family Farm, known for its sustainable agriculture practices.

Nightly News: With 75 percent of the planet’s reefs in serious trouble from overfishing, coastal development, and pollution, NBC News’ Chief Environmental Affairs Correspondent, Anne Thompson, will look at what’s being done to protect coral reefs around the world.

Sprout will premiere its new exclusive animated series “Justin Time” on Earth Day, kicking off a week-long celebration on The Sunny Side Up Show live morning block that will inform preschoolers about the world around them and promote conservation and the importance of caring for the environment.

Access Hollywood and Access Hollywood Live will air green segments on celebrity, lifestyle and beauty, including an exclusive look at H&M’s Conscious Collection, as well as Jessica Alba’s eco-friendly baby line. There will also be a special green-themed weekend show featuring eco-conscious celebrities.

NBC Sports Network will air an interview with environmental advocate and Boston Bruins defenseman, Andrew Ference, on what he does to stay green.

Style: A green themed episode of “Jerseylicious” and “Big Rich Texas” will premiere during the week.

E! Entertainment: “E! News” will air special eco-interviews with celebrities on what they do to help the environment, and on-air talent will be wearing recycled or “green” fashions all week. Plus Mayim Bialik takes “E! News” Eco-thrift shopping and correspondent Ashlan Gorse takes viewers for a spin in her 100% electric “Active E!” BMW, which is one of only 700 in the world. The network will also incorporate green themes on its hit shows, including “Fashion Police” and “The Soup.”

CNBC: Viewers will learn about the business of green throughout the week on “Fast Money Halftime Report,” “Fast Money” and “Mad Money w/Jim Cramer.” “The Suze Orman Show” will also air a special eco-themed edition of “Can I Afford It?” Additionally, CNBC.com will be looking at what the “Green Upside” is for different industries and businesses, including how some Big Three auto factories are now being converted to non-auto businesses such as food factories and condo complexes.

NBC: “Days of Our Lives” will integrate green content into its storyline this week.

iVillage will feature a wealth of green content across its site from home and kitchen tips to DIY eco-ideas to help women be green.

DailyCandy will share the latest and greatest eco-friendly deals in email, online and via social nets during the week, as well as feature green stories and lifestyle tips for the home, fashion, beauty and motherhood.

MSNBC: Segments throughout the week will focus on advancing the conversation around renewable energy, sustainability and green commerce.

Golf Channel: “Morning Drive” will host eco-minded guests throughout the week. “Golf Central” will also cover environmental trends in the industry, and air an interview with Mike Davis, Executive Director of the United States Golf Association, about setting up the course for the US Open.

G4: This week’s “Attack of the Show” will talk about green technology. “X-Play” hosts Adam Sessler and Morgan Webb will also highlight and recommend eco-friendly games.

Telemundo: the Spanish language network is coloring its programing green, starting with the morning show “Levántate” challenging viewers to make small changes in their lives that can have a big impact on the environment. The daily news magazine, “Al Rojo Vivo” will run special reports on environmental issues close to the Hispanic community; and all local stations will also join the green party, featuring local green stories and integrations in evening newscasts throughout the week.

Mun2: Green tips will air on “18 & Over,” as well as “Reventón with Yarel,” and green stories will be included in the daily news roundup.

Comcast SportsNets will incorporate daily green tips in across all SportsNets shows, as well as air green stories on local teams and stadiums.

Petside is encouraging pet owners to live a green and eco-friendly life by offering a green-themed sweepstakes and giveaway. The brand will also feature actionable green tips to help consumers live a green life with their pets.

NBC Owned Stations: Across the week, the NBC Owned Stations will be participating in Earth Week in a variety of ways, including covering potential stories and events that are relevant to each specific market.
